Insufficient dissolved oxygen in the water
Stagnant water bodies get polluted easily because of insufficient dissolved oxygen in the water. Moreover, thermal stratification occurs in the water body. Many people here that aeration is the key to stagnant water problems, however that leaves the question for many pond novices of what is a pond aerator? Specific zones of extremely high temperature and extremely low temperature are created. The sudden increase in the water temperature supports algal bloom. The excess algae do not get sufficient oxygen and hence die and decompose; leading to eutrophication. This increases the organic load of the water body manifold.
Pond aerators act as an inversion system that restores the natural balance and proportion among the algae and weed population of a lake. This, in turn, helps in improving the quality of the water. Proper aeration is achieved by several steps. First, the water column is aerated and circulated so that the water does not stagnate within the water body. Secondly, the water column is de-stratified. These inversion steps are carried out several times, depending on the requirement of the water body.
Diffusers are placed at the bottom of the lake and compressed air is ejected out of the diffusers. The lake is then aerated from top to bottom in a non turbulent flow of air through the water. Sometimes, bacteria and other microorganisms are added to utilize the high organic content available in the lake water.
Benefits of a Pond Aerator – An excessive inflow of nutrients into the water body would increase the organic load and hence the oxygen demand of the lake. The lake aerator helps in dissolving more oxygen in the water, thus making oxygen available to the aquatic organisms. It boosts the habitats of aquatic animals and fishes. When the water quality is improved, it can be used for swimming, boating and other recreational activities. According to research, management of watershed can only reduce 5 – 35% of the pollution in stagnant water. Therefore a good pond aerator is a great innovative way to restore a lake and improve the water quality.
