Translation is a mean of interlingual communication. The English-Russian translator (iterpreter) enables an exchange of information between speakers of English and Russian by producing in Russian a text which has an identical communicative value with the English text. But still the translated into Russian text is not totally identical with the English text as to its form originality content due to the limitations imposed by the formal and semantic differences between the English language and Russian translation.
National coloring in the English Russian translation is one of examples of these differences. Now it is one of the most important subjects to be studied and discussed. For tens of years the USSR’s borders were closed and Russians didn’t have much opportunity to interact with many foreign countries. Of course, they got a great number of books from foreign countries but most of them were either classic books or books of working class. Thus, it was impossible to value properly the foreign literature. One could see the same situation in the foreign countries when people had almost no access to Russian literature.
The only opportunity they had was reading and translating from Russian classics. Consequently people could get only a vague idea about the national coloring of Russia and could draw only archaic coloring of the literary works. And now all the countries of former USSR can perform there own literature and hence national coloring as every literary work has its own national coloring. Every work is created on the national ground, reflects national problems of the country where the author lives. As a result, the country with its language, mode of life, political, historical, economical atmosphere and many other factors influences the literary work and it acquires the national coloring of the country even if the author does not think of creating of any work that would be nationally colored. Passing from one nation to another, from one language to another, literature enriches and extends the notion of peoples about each other. To convey national coloring is not an easy task. Owing to the translation to Russian the most prominent foreign literary works were able to appear in Russia and became available for Russian speaking. The translation helps mutual knowing and peoples’ enrichment.
Presenting of national coloring in translation, in our case in translation from English to Russian, is to be one of the most difficult tasks for translator. National coloring must be reflected adequately in the translation. National coloring is the property of the country or its part. Every nation is proud of its history, traditions and it would consider an offence if the translator fails to convey the national coloring or if he conveys it wrong when translating the work to Russian. That is why it is very important for translator to be extremely attentive and careful with any kind of literary work.
